The Fiat 500e, Fiat’s first all-electric vehicle, has finally arrived in the North American market, bringing with it an intuitive and fun emissions-free driving experience! The Fiat 500e marks the first battery-electric vehicle (BEV) from Stellantis to hit the American market, while others are lined up to follow suit. With the popularity of electric vehicles rising by the day, if you’re like most drivers, you probably have questions about how an electric vehicle works. Here at Astorg Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we want you to be well-versed in BEVs before making the switch. Therefore, you can read about the all-new Fiat 500e and its impressive all-electric powertrain below!

How is the 2024 Fiat 500e Powered?

The 2024 Fiat 500e is the brand’s first BEV, meaning it is completely void of an internal combustion engine, eliminating the need for fuel. The 500e is both wider and longer than the previous gas-powered model. It features a front axle-mounted electric motor that delivers 118 horsepower and 169 lb-ft of torque. Due to its all-electric power, the electric motor delivers torque instantly upon pressing the accelerator pedal without waiting for RPMs to build. This electric drive module is powered by a 42-kilowatt-hour (kWh), high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack. The wider and longer design allows for a more spacious interior by not sacrificing the space needed for the battery pack. Under normal driving conditions, the Fiat 500e has an estimated driving range of up to 149 miles!

How Do I Charge the Fiat 500e?

As a BEV, the 500e requires being plugged in instead of filled with fuel. All BEVs have three levels of charging power. The first is Level 1. Level 1 chargers are the standard chargers that come with the purchase of an EV and are plugged into a traditional 120-volt home outlet. Providing the slowest charging times, the Level 1 charger is good for plugging the vehicle in overnight for a trickle charge. Meanwhile, Level 2 chargers are available. A Level 2 charger is either plugged into a 240-volt outlet, like the ones used for washing machines or hardwired into your home’s electrical system. With a Level 2 charger, the Fiat 500e can be fully charged in four hours and 15 minutes. Level 2 chargers are also commonly found at public charging stations. Finally, Level 3 chargers, also called Direct Current (DC) Fast Chargers, are exclusively at public charging stations. Using a DC Fast Charger, the 500e can receive up to 31 miles of range in just five minutes, providing the fastest charging time. Like all EVs, the Fiat 500e uses regenerative braking to increase or maintain the battery’s charge on the go by converting the kinetic energy created by braking into electrical energy and reversing the electric motors to send it back to the battery. This also extends the life of the vehicle’s brakes by slowing down the car using the electric motors instead of the brakes.

Fiat 500e Range-Preserving Drive Modes

Like most EVs, the Fiat 500e uses a series of drive modes, allowing drivers to optimize the vehicle’s usage to their specific needs. Each drive mode provides increasingly aggressive range-preserving actions. In Normal mode, drivers can enjoy a familiar driving experience, as it provides performance and range nearly consistent with that of an internal combustion engine. Meanwhile, Range mode provides a more optimal range by activating the one-pedal driving function. This uses the electric motor and regenerative braking system to provide stop and go function using just the gas pedal. Range mode uses regenerative braking to capture more energy while decelerating. The most aggressive range mode is called Sherpa. By selecting this mode, the driver can ensure they reach the nearest charging station or intended destination by maximizing energy efficiency. It makes adjustments to various functions to maximize range. For example, the top speed is reduced to 50 MPH to limit the power consumption. Meanwhile, the power to the electric motor is reduced from 87 kW to 57 kW. However, this can be overridden with a full throttle by fully depressing the accelerator pedal to provide full power if it is necessary.
